Film Screening: Mogens Jacobsen

Screening of three short experimental films by Danish artist Mogens Jacobsen.

Bridge (2003)
Duration 2 min. 23 sec.
Video SD (later upscaled to HD)

“Bridge” is an algorithmic film about architecture. The film is based on a collage of still images of buildings in Tokyo, Japan. These tall structures are scanned vertically and are only seen through a small horizontal gap in the screen. The rest of the screen is filled with two single lines – the top and bottom of the gap repeated. As the gap moves through the image, these lines perform a slow, soft, abstract animation.

Washsalon (1980&1981/2015),
Duration: 4 min. 1 second
8mm film transferred to digital video.

In 1980, I heard the track “Waschsalon Berlin” by the legendary German composer and audio artist Frieder Butzmann. Inspired by this track, I created an 8mm film shot in an abandoned laundromat in Denmark.
Frieder and I met for the first time in 1983, but it took until 2015 when we combined the original soundtrack with the film.

Forest2: Live Audience Dubbing (2009/2012)
Duration: 4 min. 39 sec.
Video HD

In 2009, I experimented with warping perspective in moving images, but I never showed them publicly. In 2012, I was invited to host an Art Festival Bar at the Nikolaj Art Center in Copenhagen. I asked my friend, Frieder Butzmann, to collaborate. Frieder composed a vocal soundtrack for one of the warped videos, “Forest2”. He composed a choral work where the audience had to perform the singing themselves. Butzmann directed the audience, and the sound was recorded during the first showing. All singers were credited as performers.
